Policy Details & Nuances
Consumer Gemini apps train on chats by default when Gemini Apps Activity is on. Audio and Gemini Live recordings are not used for training. Workspace and Cloud (Vertex AI) do not train on user data.
Turn off Gemini Apps Activity at myactivity.google.com. Future chats will not be used for training. You can also delete past chats or use Temporary Chats. EU/UK users have GDPR right to object.
Retention Period
Default 18 months, adjustable to 3 or 36 months. Temporary chats and Keep Activity off: 72 hours. Reviewed chats: up to 3 years, disconnected from account. Audio recordings: deleted after 3 years of inactivity.
Deletion on Request
YesDelete individual chats or clear all Gemini Apps Activity anytime. Chats already reviewed by humans are retained up to 3 years disconnected from your account. Turning off Keep Activity does not delete data in other Google services.
Shared with service providers for human review (disconnected from account first). Connected third-party apps receive data per their own privacy policies. Google does not sell personal data.
A subset of chats is reviewed by human annotators to improve models, reduce unintended activations, and keep Gemini safe. Reviewers assess response quality, accuracy, and safety. Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being reviewed for improvement.
Context & Variations
EU/UK users have GDPR rights including right to object to processing and request data correction. Korea-based users are subject to Korean Location Terms. Some regions have different Activity defaults or require explicit consent.
Available to users 13+ (or regional age of consent). Teens have specific default settings. Google applies strict safety filters for teen interactions.
Workspace, Vertex AI, and Cloud customers are covered under enterprise agreements with no data training, no human review, and local residency support. Separate Generative AI in Google Workspace Privacy Hub applies.
