Free, Plus, and Pro accounts train on your data by default. API, Team, and Enterprise accounts are excluded from training.
Go to Settings > Data Controls and toggle off 'Improve the model for everyone'. If you do not have an account, you can submit a request through the OpenAI Privacy Center.
Retention Period
Chat history stays indefinitely if enabled. If disabled, data is kept for 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deleted.
Deletion on Request
YesYou can delete individual chats or your entire account. Deletion takes up to 30 days. Backup copies may remain for a short time after.
Shared with vendors, service providers, and affiliates for operations, security monitoring, and legal compliance. Not sold to advertisers.
A sample of chats may be reviewed by human trainers to improve safety and performance. This does not apply if you have opted out of training or use enterprise/API services.
Context & Variations
EEA, UK, and Swiss users follow a separate privacy policy with full GDPR rights, including the right to object and request deletion through dedicated regional compliance workflows.
Minimum age is 13 (or regional equivalent). Users under 18 need parental or guardian consent. OpenAI does not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
Enterprise (Team and Enterprise tiers) and API accounts do not train on your data by default. They also offer custom retention agreements and compliance certifications such as SOC 2 and GDPR.
